The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the most feared and successful American fighter aircraft of World War II. Instantly recognizable by its distinctive inverted gull wings, the Corsair was designed around the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, making it one of the fastest piston-engine fighters of the war.
First flown in 1940 and entering combat in 1942, the Corsair initially operated from land bases because its long nose and difficult landing characteristics made carrier operations challenging. Once those issues were resolved, it became a highly effective carrier-based fighter and fighter-bomber for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
The Corsair earned a legendary reputation in the Pacific Theater, where its speed, firepower, and rugged construction allowed it to dominate Japanese aircraft, including the famous Zero. Some wartime accounts credited the Corsair with an air-to-air kill ratio of roughly 11:1.
After World War II, the Corsair continued serving in the Korean War as a fighter-bomber and close air support aircraft. More than 12,500 were built, making it one of the most important and longest-produced American piston-engine fighters ever made.
