As you prepare for your SSDI hearing, it is worth a few minutes to put yourself in the shoes of your judge and think about how you would evaluate a claim. One technique that most people can absorb is to tell your story.
Given the delays in Social Security’s decision making process, you have undoubtedly been living with your disabling medical condition for many months or many years. As such your medical records tell only a part of the story. What has your life been like? Have you lost your home, car or even your family because you can no longer work? Judges recognize instinctually that no one is going to give up financial security and the emotional stability of work to sit at home for two years waiting for Social Security to maybe start benefits.
In this video, I focus on the importance of telling your story. Talk about the beginning stages of your medical issues, how treatment has worked and your current status. Help the judge develop a sense of empathy about the struggles that now dominate your life.
