True-Speed, Pitch-Perfect Vocals meet the original first-generation string take—letting the song’s pure beauty shine brighter than ever.
I’ve often wondered what went through George Martin’s mind as he conducted the strings on the first take of The Beatles' She’s Leaving Home. Despite his classical pedigree, he hadn’t written the orchestral score — a rare Beatles exception. Paul had first asked Martin, but with a Cilla Black session already booked, the task was delayed. Eager to move forward, Paul turned instead to Mike Leander, whom he’d met during a Marianne Faithfull session covering Yesterday.
This remix presents that original instrumental take, now combined with Paul and John’s vocals (extracted from Giles Martin’s 2017 remix). I was motivated to begin this project after hearing the wonderfully lush strings on the Anthology 4 version, which served as the instrumental source for this remix. A significant syncing challenge arose because part of the instrumental score was edited out for the released version on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. In this remix, you’ll now hear those previously edited-out cello notes immediately after each of the “bye bye’s.”
Additionally, the speed and pitch were increased for the final released mono version. Giles Martin also retained this increased speed for his 2017 stereo remix. To my ears, that speed and pitch always sounded a bit unnatural. I am fully satisfied with this new 2026 corrected speed and pitch version, which allows the pure beauty of this song to shine even brighter. It now exists at the correct speed, in its original, unedited, first-generation form — created entirely from high-resolution sources.
Only two Beatles — Paul and John — appear on She’s Leaving Home, and no Beatle plays an instrument on the track. According to Paul, the intent was to create a song in the style of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. John wasn’t particularly keen on musicals, though he did have a fondness for West Side Story. Their shared goal was to tell a story through song, much like the popular musicals of that era.
The strings backing track was recorded in six takes at EMI’s Studio Two on March 17, 1967, with George Martin conducting four violins, two violas, two cellos, a double bass, and a harp. Notably, the harpist was Sheila Bromberg, who holds the distinction of being the first female musician specifically recruited to perform on a Beatles recording. Paul’s lead vocal and John’s fine backing vocal were recorded three days later, on March 20, in the same studio. During the mono mixing stage, an experiment with ADT (artificial double tracking) on the opening harp was attempted, but fortunately later abandoned.
U.K. fans were the first to hear She’s Leaving Home with the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on June 1, 1967. Capitol released the album the following day for U.S. fans. This marked the first time Capitol did not alter the song placement or running order of a Beatles album, having been explicitly instructed not to do so.
As always, thank you for listening and taking the time to read this description.
A splendid time is guaranteed for all
