I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid Winter as we visit and give you a virtual tour of one of the twelve historic, fairy tale, rural granite mountain villages. Today we visit the castle village of Belmonte in central Portugal.

Me and Mariana begin by introducing ourselves on a beautiful cobbled street, underneath the main gateway where the castle is standing ominously behind us, here we talk a little about what we expect to see and do in the village.

First things first we walk through the large wooden castle gates, which lead us to the keep of the stronghold. It is here where the villagers would have held markets and exchanged wares back in the 13th century when the castle village was first founded and onwards through to maybe the 18th century.

After that, Mariana and I wandered up to the visitors centre, bought our entry tickets and made our way to the tallest tower, where we went up the spiral staircase, right up to the top of the castles highest point.

Shortly afterwards Mariana and I took a walk around the castle town, showed the high street and spoke a while about the statue of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Portuguese diplomat whose hometown was Belmonte, he discovered Brazil in the year 1500 on his way to India.

Next we walked down the fairy tale granite steps and wandered around the old quarter of the town, looked at the town hall and a few other things that we found around the town, such as the old olive press, where we spoke about the legend where the lord of Belmonte famously threw his daughter under the olive press and said he would rather watch her crushed by the press than surrender the castle.

After the trip to Belmonte we went a short distance away from the town where our friend wanted us to show you all her house for sale, as well as a large section of old abandoned farmland property which is also for sale. The little village house is available for 50,000 euros and the owner has asked for any interest to be sent to my email address, [email protected] afterwards I can forward the interest onto her, as she does not have internet access.

Once we got back to our own farm we took a walk up to our sheep barn, where I show you all Charles, our little ram lamb that was born this week, he is born to first time mother Charlotte, who is being a fantastic mother. We are hoping this easy delivery makes for a start to a very easy lambing season 2022.
