Suspended across Ngā Pou Ruahine ceiling and wall, on the second floor, Earth Mothers traces a powerful ancestral thread of Te Āti Awa femininity, blending atua, colour, memory, and place to invite visitors into reflection and connection.
The deep oranges, reds and purples in this rawa embrace you, carrying a matrilineal thread of Āti Awa identity that envelops the room. Within these hues, mother, grandmother and great grandmother appear as Hineahuone, the birther, Hinetītama, the nuturer and Hinenuitepō, the spiritual guardian. Visualise your own divine feminine whakapapa. Who appears to you?
Matua te Kore watches over us, while the drawings of a child speak of generations yet to come. As the sun rises over Mātairangi, and morning light catches this rawa, the harbour gathers its glow. We are too held in that rhythm - renewed with each dawn.
