Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow, Alaska)

Utqiaġvik is the northernmost city in the United States, located on the Arctic coast of Alaska, where the Chukchi Sea meets the Beaufort Sea. Situated about 515 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, it stands as one of the most remote and scientifically significant human settlements on Earth. The name Utqiaġvik comes from the Iñupiaq language, meaning “the place for gathering wild roots,” reflecting the deep cultural connection of the Iñupiat Indigenous people to the land.

The town experiences extreme polar conditions, with long, dark winters and short, bright summers. Every year, from mid-November to late January, Utqiaġvik enters the Polar Night, a period of about 65 days when the sun never rises above the horizon. In contrast, from mid-May to early August, it enjoys the Midnight Sun, when daylight lasts 24 hours. Temperatures often stay below freezing for most of the year, and the ground remains permanently frozen (permafrost).

Despite its harsh environment, Utqiaġvik is a hub for Arctic research, especially in climate science, as it lies on the frontlines of global warming. Rising temperatures and melting sea ice are rapidly reshaping the local ecosystem and traditional ways of life. The Iñupiat community, however, continues to maintain their traditions — hunting whales, seals, and fish; crafting tools and clothing from natural materials; and preserving oral histories that connect generations.

Modern Utqiaġvik blends ancient culture with contemporary life — with schools, research centers, modern housing, and internet connectivity coexisting alongside traditional practices. The town’s isolation fosters a strong sense of community, resilience, and respect for nature.
