Did you know Hanukkah (also Chanukah) is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible? That's right, the NEW Testament! Nowhere in the Old Testament is Hanukkah mentioned.
The Hebrew word for "dedication" is chanukah, which this lesser feast day has been called since the rededication of Solomon's Temple back to God after the Greeks desicrated it years before. When the Jews fought back and won their right to worship God the way He commands they cleaned out the temple of all the Greek paraphernalia and set up the alter and the menorah.
The 7 branched menorah is suppose to continuously burn but the Greeks had long snuffed out its flame. The menorah was filled with what oil they had on hand and they waited as others went to get more oil. The little bit of oil lasted 8 days, or so we're told, and the making of a new 9 branch menorah was made to commemorate the rededication of the temple back to God. Why is this important for Christians? This is yet another event Satan attempted to kill Jesus' bloodline before he was born. I encourage every Jesus loving Christian to look into this!
