The Catholic Nation of the Philippine Islands was a theocratic state established in 1905 after the decline of colonial rule. It rejected secular republicanism and foreign monarchy, placing authority in the hands of the Cardinal-Patriarch of Manila, who served as both head of state and church leader. The government was run by a Sacred Council of Bishops, with canon law serving as national law.
The CNPI was deeply Marian, with religious festivals, education, and law reflecting Catholic doctrine. It gained Vatican recognition through the 1912 Divine Concordat, and developed a unique Filipino-Catholic identity, expressed through its symbols, liturgy, and traditions.
After declaring independence on June 12, 1898, the Philippines briefly functioned as the First Philippine Republic, but political instability and foreign pressure led to its collapse. In 1905, the clergy established the Catholic Nation of the Philippine Islands (CNPI), replacing secular rule with a theocratic government led by the Cardinal-Patriarch of Manila and a Sacred Council of Bishops.
The CNPI unified the country under Catholic doctrine, secured Vatican recognition through the 1912 Divine Concordat, and fostered a deeply Marian national culture. By the 1930s, modernization and rising democratic ideals prompted Cardinal-Patriarch Miguel II Salazar (Tiffanum Chiesa) to guide a peaceful transition toward democracy.
By the early 1930s, declaring as Constitutional Marian Republic of the Philippines, internal and external pressures—rising Filipino secular nationalism, economic modernization, and global calls for self-rule—led Card-Pat. Tiffanum Chiesa to initiate a peaceful transition from theocratic rule to a constitutional democracy.
In 1935, the Philippine Marian Republic was dissolved from into secular Republic of the Philippines by its President Manuel L. Quezon.

The Pontifical Anthem and March (Italian: Inno e Marcia Pontificale), also known as the Papal Anthem, is the anthem played to mark the presence of the Pope or one of his representatives, such as a nuncio, and on other solemn occasions. It was composed by Charles Gounod, a French composer who was heavily committed to giving some of the most significant religious works to humanity.
Yutang Tabonon (O Mutyang Lupa; Beloved Land) is a Catholic hymn in the Cebuano language, praying for protection of the Filipino people.
The lyrics were written by Monsignor Rudy Villanueva. They are not a translation of either the Italian or the Latin lyrics of the Pontifical Anthem.
