Robert Brooks Murder Case Update: Former CO takes manslaughter plea deal
ROBERT BROOKS UPDATE | Inmate Robert Brooks died on December 10, 2024, after a brutal, on-camera beating by Marcy Correctional Facility officers. Since our January 2025 coverage, the case has continued.

Christopher Walrath became the first of the six murder defendants to flip, pleading guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter—a deal that carries 15 years and locks in his testimony against fellow guards
Nicholas Gentile admitted he wiped up Brooks’ blood and filed no report; he took a misdemeanor tampering plea and must resign or face jail
Michael Mashaw—charged with manslaughter for pummeling Brooks moments after intake—now has an October 6, 2025, trial date in Oneida County Court

Five guards still face 2nd-degree murder, three face manslaughter, and another is slated for evidence-tampering; the consolidated October jury trial will test New York’s new body-cam rules for prisons.
