April 16th, 2025 - Mindful Public Safety Hour - How do we build real resilience and mental fitness in corrections, law enforcement, and public safety?
In this session, John MacAdams, CMTP — senior trainer and program manager for the Center for Mindfulness in Public Safety and a mindfulness practitioner of 40+ years — breaks down the brain science behind stress, performance, and long-term wellbeing for public safety professionals.
Drawing from his experience training over a thousand personnel in the Mindfulness-Based Wellness & Resiliency (MBWR) curriculum, John explains:
What mental fitness means beyond “mental health”
Why dementia and cognitive decline matter for first responders
Key lifestyle factors that protect the brain (movement, cognitive engagement, cardio-metabolic health)
How the amygdala hijack and negativity bias shape our reactions under pressure
Why neuroplasticity is a “superpower” we can train across the lifespan
Practical ways to use mindfulness, breathing, and movement to reset during and after shifts
Simple “tactical resets” and mindful commuting practices you can start today
John also guides a short, accessible breath-awareness practice you can use on your own or with your teams, and the group reflects on:
Sleep and power naps for learning and recovery
Epigenetics and why genes are not destiny
How ongoing practice and “mental reps” support long-term resilience
Who this is for:
Corrections professionals, law enforcement officers, public safety personnel, peer support, wellness teams, trainers, and anyone supporting frontline staff.
If this session is useful, please like, share, and subscribe so more public safety professionals can access these tools.
