Coffee roasters in the United States were struggling to compete after 10% tariffs were placed on Brazil.
On 6 August, the tariff rate jumped to 50%. Import markets for Brazilian coffee shut down, and coffee vendors in the US are scrambling to find new sources of supply at lower cost.
But prices from other countries are also shooting higher, and the Brazilian beans are crucial for many of the world's top-selling coffee blends.
Large buyers in China were quick to take advantage, and China's government announced fast-tracked approvals for Brazilian coffee vendors to sell to the Chinese markets for the next five years.
