On January 3, 2026, right in the heart of Seoul, there exists a market that embraces 60 years of history while simultaneously captivating the taste buds of the MZ generation. Located within sight of the Dongnimmun (Independence Gate) and Seodaemun Prison, this place is steeped in the sorrowful history of families buying tteok (rice cakes) and fruit to support independence activists imprisoned there.
Known for its excellent value-for-money street food like kwaegi (twisted donuts), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), the market has become a "hot place" popular with young people and tourists via social media. It was once famous as Seoul's representative wholesale tteok market, and many tteok shops still operate here today.
The market is situated between Dongnimmun Station (Line 3) and Seodaemun Station (Line 5), and its proximity to the Independence Gate, Seodaemun Independence Park, and the Seodaemun Prison History Hall makes it an ideal tourist course.
Facilities have been well modernized with the installation of an arcade, yet it maintains the friendly atmosphere of a neighborhood market closely connected to the nearby residential area. Parking has become very convenient thanks to the Dongnimmun Culture Park Public Parking Lot, which was completed in 2025.

現在は、クァベギ（ねじり揚げパン）、トッポギ、トッカルビなど、コスパの良いグルメが豊富で、SNSを通じて若者や観光客の間で「ホットプレイス」として人気を集めています。かつてソウルを代表する餅の卸売市場として有名だった名残で、今でも多くの餅屋が営業を続けています。
地下鉄3号線「独立門駅」と5号線「西大門駅」の間に位置し、独立門、西大門独立公園、西大門刑務所歴史館に隣接しているため、観光コースとしても最適です。アーケードの設置など施設の近代化が進む一方で、周辺の住宅街に密着した路地型市場ならではの温かい雰囲気を残しています。特に2025年に完成した独立門文化公園公共駐車場のおかげで、駐車が非常に便利になりました。
