Japan New Year traditions focus on finishing the year well — through Ōsōji cleaning, reflection, and small rituals like a yuzu bath to reset both home and mind. In this video, I share what that looks like here in Wakayama, Japan, at the quiet start of the new year.
I take you along as I prepare my home, soak in a traditional yuzu bath, and wander through historic streets where everyday life feels carefully looked after. I also have a chance encounter with subscribers who invite me into their newly purchased traditional machiya, and I reflect on care, connection, and what it means to begin the year feeling lighter.
I also share my word for the year — something simple, but meaningful — as I ease into the year ahead.
If you’re curious about Japanese culture, slow living, or gentle ways to reset at the start of the year, I hope this video brings you a sense of calm and inspiration.
Thank you for being here and for being part of this community.
I wish you a peaceful, meaningful, and gentle 2026 🌿
✨ Question for you:
Do you choose a word or intention for the year ahead?

If you are new to the channel, my name is Chani and I am a middle aged Australian who was stuck in a rut and moved to Japan to live. I bought an Akiya or empty house and started renovating. I'd love it if you subscribed and joined the community.
