Literacy in Latin America is a critical challenge with a severe impact on education and socioeconomic development in the region. Currently, only 55.7% of children learn to read and write at the appropriate age, meaning that 3.5 million children fail to become literate each year. Overcoming learning poverty is fundamental to the development of fairer and less unequal countries.
In this context, we propose a regional movement for literacy, based on collective action of a systemic and comprehensive nature, through strong, scalable, and sustainable coalitions between the public sector, the third sector, and civil society.
The commitment of the Natura Institute and its partners aims to strengthen public literacy policies in the region, ensuring that at least eight out of ten children are literate at the correct age by 2031, reaching more than 20 million students in six countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru). This approach has already demonstrated concrete results, impacting more than 4 million students.
