Let's go to work on our DC-6 (Annual Inspection Part 2)

Описание: Welcome back to our Annual Inspection Series! In Episode 2, we continue the deep dive into the yearly inspection of our Douglas DC-6.

This episode focuses on the start of the maintenance phase. After removing the engine cowlings, the team begins with a detailed engine inspection, engine wash, and incoming ground run preparation. Even small details matter - for example, identifying fuel stains, which can reveal subtle fuel leaks that are often harder to detect than oil leaks.

You’ll see how the team carefully dismantles the engine cowlings, inspects critical fuel system components, and performs a thorough engine wash to ensure that every area - including under the head baffles and around pushrod housings - can be properly inspected. Teamwork is key as multiple mechanics work together to keep the process efficient across all four engines.

With the ground run complete, the DC-6 is moved into its final maintenance position in Hangar-8, where it will remain for the next two months. The hangar is prepared with custom engine stands, fall-protection systems, and service connections for electricity and compressed air.

From there, the famous “Panel Party” begins - dozens of inspection and access panels are opened according to the maintenance work package. During this process we already encounter our first finding: a fuel leak, which leads us deeper into the aircraft’s fuel system.

Later in the episode, work begins on the engines using the service task cards. We remove and cut open the spin-on oil filters, screen them for contaminants, and send oil samples for further laboratory analysis. Every small particle can reveal valuable information about the health of the engine.

This episode gives a real behind-the-scenes look at how a large radial-engine airliner is prepared for its annual inspection - with 95 task cards, countless panels, and a dedicated team working step by step according to the maintenance manuals.

In the final part of the episode, we also begin checking the ignition system and magneto timing.
