The Origin of Money : A Short Story of How Money Began
Money began with metal. The first coins were created in the Kingdom of Lydia. These early coins became the foundation of monetary systems across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.

For nearly a thousand years, the Roman Empire shaped how money worked. Even today, many currencies carry its legacy — pound, dinar, lira, peso, dinero. The word “money” itself comes from the Temple of Moneta, where coins were first minted in Rome.

Roman money was built on metals — gold, silver, and sometimes bronze. Gold dominated international trade. Silver connected large and everyday transactions. Bronze was used for daily exchange. This created a clear hierarchy of value: gold above silver, silver above all others.

But maintaining this system was never easy. The value between metals constantly changed — due to new mines, wars, and shifting demand. As a result, rulers faced a dilemma: adjust the system… or manipulate it.

Some chose stability. Others chose debasement. And that tension… is where the story of modern money truly begins.
