Europe on the outskirts?
What does Russian television rhetoric about the future of world politics show
In the latest episode of Vladimir Solovyov's program, the topic of the Ukrainian front was intertwined with discussions about the "end of Western hegemony" and the "global turn to the East".
The main emphasis was placed on the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in China: it was presented not as a regional meeting, but as a symbol of the shift in the world's center of gravity - from the West to the "Global South". In the rhetoric of the Russian participants, this event was almost the funeral of the transatlantic era. Europe was presented as the "outskirts of history" - economically weakened, politically fragmented and unable to influence global processes.
But what is behind this image?
Europe as a target of propaganda
The key motif of the broadcast is the demonstrative humiliation of European leaders. German Chancellor Merz is ridiculed, French President Macron is portrayed as an "insignificant military player", Britain as a "frontman of someone else's war". Arguments are replaced by ridicule and historical parallels: Germany is doomed to repeat defeats, Europe does not learn its lessons.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit has started in China, with over twenty heads of state taking part. European media have already called the summit show evidence of the collapse of Western hegemony. Against the backdrop of tariff wars, the countries of the global south are only strengthening their cooperation, but Trump holds the honorary title of President of Europe, and is proud of it. Although they don’t listen to him much there, the Europeans are actively discussing troops in Ukraine, a buffer zone, and training Ukrainian soldiers. Merz generally agreed that he is already at war with Russia, I’m still waiting for him to say “Nacht Ost” and demand the destruction of all these “Slavich Untermench”. In general, of course, he is some kind of caricature character. There is something about him, I just want to give him a helmet or something, a suit, a machine gun, and just for him to try to make a forced march, because the bastard will die on the second kilometer. They are so rotten, you just look at these remnants. What can you expect from them, my God. Well, it just feels like he's from some Kukarniks caricature, like they used to depict caricature Nazis. Well, villas, right next to the Mertz's backside, would look absolutely convincing. But I think that we ourselves need to introduce a new discipline in many higher education institutions.
