Joseph McLean

I'm a middle school math teacher with 30 years of teaching experience.
My focus is teaching as conceptually as possible - meaning that I want my students to understand why something works and how that mathematical idea connects to other ideas we have learned. If we can avoid teaching math as a collection of processes and procedures that must be memorized and rather teach math as a series of interconnected ideas that make sense, students will learn to apply and extend ideas into new contexts. Ultimately, I want students to learn to think mathematically, not mimic abstract processes.
